The Love Affair with Cigars

Smoking a cigar is an art which one learns to master….

  • What makes a man or a woman in love with a cigar?

  • Is it just the elegant taste that comes from each draw and puff?

  • Is it the look of class and sophistication?

  • Is it the slow burn rate?

  • Is it the color of the ash?

  • Is it the way the oil in the wrapper leaf appears?

  • Is it the feel between the thumb and the index finger?

  • Is it the sensation between taste and smell?

  • Smoke and aroma?

Whatever is this mysterious attraction between a man and his smoke, there is no denying the attraction is strong.

Anatomy of a Cigar

The Head: The end you put in your mouth

The Foot: The side that you light

The Filler: Blend of dried and fermented tobacco

The Wrapper: Where a lot of  flavor comes from

How to Choose a Good Cigar

  • Choose a shape – does size matter?

  • The wrapper should be perfect; no tears or rough texture

  • Cigar should be uniform in color and not spotted

  • Cigar should not be dry but should have a luster or sheen

  • Cigar should be well filled with tobacco and firm

  • Smell it with a deep inhale

  • Roll cigar between the thumb & index finger for construction

  • Humidors help with moisture: too humid will rot /not humid enough will dry out

Cigar and Spirits Pairings

Some classic pairings with cigars are cognac, rum and port. Choose carefully the ageing and quality since you certainly wouldn't like to smoke your favorites with low-grade drinks. With the exception of tequila, most white spirits – such as vodka and gin - do not work as well because the cigar will overpower the drink. Many aficionados consider rum to be the best drink for cigars.

Liquor: Brown vs Clear

Which is the Worst for Hangovers? Clear will get you intoxicated faster? Switching between clear and dark will make you intoxicated faster? All distilled spirits are clear in their stills, however, it’s when left maturing in wooden casks that gives brown spirits its color, flavor; and CONGENERS.
