March for Our Lives: Fighting for Change and Gun Control
(03/25/2018) In my era - being a Jersey girl I felt the pain of 911; while living in Houston I felt the pain of victims of Hurricane Rita - and then Hurricane Harvey; now living in Chicago, I see the pain from gun violence; but today, I am witnessing something amazing: our youth, our young people, our further leaders - high schoolers who are taking a stand and say “Enough is Enough” to the many mass shootings in schools! Schools which should be a place of learning and growing up. But, through no fault of their own, have been thrusted into activism, taking a stand against a powerful force, to make change for survival - from gun violence.
While watching the march on TV, I cried tears that was filled with varied emotions. Though the epic center of the march was Washington, DC - other US cities and countries around the world – I repeat: countries around the world participated and it was so touching. The speakers and crowds were made up of victims, survivors, and supporters of gun violence. These high schoolers, victims who have experienced a tragedy so life changing, have created a movement that has gotten the world’s attention, and don’t appear to be backing down; and they shouldn’t – please don’t.
Mass shooting after mass shooting, nothing of significant change has happened policy makers for our country. Now, this is not to say that a mass shooting will never, ever happen again, but we need restrictions so that it won’t be as easy or catastrophic.
Why is Mario Rubio saying ‘many Americans do not support a gun ban’ when what people are wanting is gun control? Not a ban but gun control. Now, while I cherish my right to gun ownership, I do agree that we need gun control.
Lawmakers listen up; you better listen to our future leaders on making change for not only their lives, but for ours and yours too. If you don’t, they will be voting you out of office very soon.
